Participant Profile: Business development consultants and mentoring programme managers supporting entrepreneurs

Course: Running Effective Mentoring Programmes (REMP)

Huru Consult is a Kenyan management and training consultancy that has supported entrepreneurs and corporate clients since 2007. While mentoring was already part of some of their programmes, it remained informal—offered without clear structure, expectations or tracking systems. As a result, engagement varied widely and impact was hard to measure.

Recognising these limitations, Huru Consult enrolled in The Human Edge’s Running Effective Mentoring Programmes (REMP) course in 2023. Their goal: to bring structure, consistency and clarity to their mentoring approach and strengthen how they supported entrepreneurs beyond the training room.

Challenges Before REMP

  • No Structured Framework Mentoring was inconsistent across programmes, making outcomes unpredictable and hard to scale.
  • No Monitoring & Evaluation Without systems in place, Huru struggled to measure mentee progress or mentor effectiveness.
  • Mentors Lacked Mentoring Skills Many mentors had technical expertise but defaulted to instructing, not listening and guiding.

What Changed After REMP

  • Structured Mentoring Programme Huru introduced a clear mentoring framework with onboarding guidelines and engagement structures.
  • Tracking & Feedback Tools Monitoring and evaluation tools now help track mentee progress and overall programme effectiveness.
  • Selective Mentor Recruitment Only mentors with the right mindset and relational skills are now engaged—and all receive tailored training.

Impact

  • Stronger Entrepreneur Growth Mentees are more accountable and supported, translating learning into measurable business outcomes.
  • Better Programme Management Programme managers are now equipped to run mentoring initiatives confidently and effectively.
  • Scalable Mentoring Model Huru has successfully expanded mentoring across more programmes, with consistent systems in place.

“The REMP course helped us transform our mentoring approach from an informal process to a structured, high-impact programme. We now have clearer structures, better-trained mentors and measurable outcomes.”
