Course: Running Effective Mentoring Programmes (REMP)

Coalition Wild is a global nonprofit dedicated to empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. Their mission: build a movement of young changemakers shaping the future of conservation. Mentoring was central to that mission—but the programme lacked structure, consistency, and preparation.

Without clear expectations or a defined framework, mentoring relationships became hit-or-miss. Participants disengaged. Resources were stretched thin. And programme leaders lacked strategies for navigating difficult mentoring dynamics.

In 2022, Coalition Wild partnered with The Human Edge through the Running Effective Mentoring Programmes (REMP) course to strengthen their approach, create clarity, and build a sustainable mentoring culture.

Challenges Before REMP

  • Unstructured Programme Management No clear roles, timelines or expectations led to confusion and inconsistent engagement.
  • Participant Readiness Gaps Mentors and mentees weren’t fully prepared, which impacted relationship quality and learning.
  • Difficulty Managing Conflict Programme managers lacked tools to support mentors and mentees when things got tricky.

What Changed After REMP

  • Stronger Programme Structure Coalition Wild implemented a clear framework that helped define roles, set timelines and improve overall coordination.
  • Mentoring Embedded in Culture Mentoring is now seen as a strategic part of professional development across the organisation.
  • Improved Preparation & Relationships Training sessions and clearer expectations helped mentors and mentees build stronger, more sustainable connections.

Impact

  • Increased Engagement & Satisfaction Participants are more confident, better prepared and more likely to stay engaged in the mentoring process.
  • Greater Efficiency with Limited Resources With structure in place, the team can do more with less—maximising impact without adding cost or strain.
  • Long-Term Sustainability Mentoring is now part of the organisation’s DNA, not just a one-off programme.

“REMP was the only course I found that offered practical, actionable guidance to make our programme better. Learning from others and gaining structure transformed how we run our programme.”
