Across UK professional membership bodies and networks, mentoring has moved from a peripheral member benefit to a strategic way to help people develop their careers, gain professional qualifications, stay in their professions and progress while creating stronger value for members.
But recognising the value of mentoring is one thing. Running it well, day after day, is another.
So what does it actually take to run effective and impactful mentoring programmes and where is delivery still catching up with intent?
This report looks at what's actually happening inside these programmes at these organisations, exploring structure, resourcing, engagement and measurement. Not to diagnose what's wrong, but to share surface the patterns, trade-offs and practical lessons the sector is learning together.

Why this matters
This isn't a benchmarking exercise. We spoke directly with the people leading mentoring day to day across health and medicine, science and engineering, and communications and third sector bodies. They shared what's working, what's not and what they wish they'd known earlier. The result is a candid snapshot of how mentoring is being delivered across 11 UK membership organisations and what their experiences reveal about making it work in practice.
If you're responsible for mentoring, member engagement or professional development at a membership body or a network, this is a chance to step outside your own programme, see how others are approaching similar challenges and pick up a few ideas worth trying.
